Mercedes Schlapp's role as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. She must contend with a president that acts as his own communications director as well as numerous legal fights which can disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration and a number of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own disputes. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her job. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job in her role as White House's advisor on strategic communications. Her job is made difficult by the fact that she has to work alongside a president of the White House who is also his communications director. There are also multiple legal cases which can disrupt the administration's strategy for communication, and a number of Cabinet secretaries are caught up with personal scandals. Schlapp has kept her eye on the goal, coordinating the implementation of policy along with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop and broader communications. She has focused on topics such as security at schools, opioids, infrastructure, as well as trade. As of now the director does not interact much with journalists. However, she attracted a lot of attention in March when she was mentioned as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. It has been a battle that has been brutal. Schlapp's allies and Tony Sayegh started arguing with the media. Schlapp made a call to Sayegh when that the Washington Examiner printed a bad story on him.
